How to Care for Fresh Flowers: Keep Your Blooms Beautiful Longer
Every bouquet tells a story—a celebration of nature's beauty, a moment of joy, a touch of elegance in your daily life. To ensure your fresh-cut flowers remain vibrant and fragrant, we've compiled our top tips for flower care. These easy-to-follow steps will help you enjoy your blooms for as long as possible.
Start with a Clean Vase
Before arranging your flowers, thoroughly wash your vase with warm, soapy water. A clean vase prevents bacteria from shortening the life of your blooms.
Trim the Stems
Using sharp scissors or pruning shears, cut 1-2 inches off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This angle increases the surface area for water absorption, keeping your flowers hydrated.
Remove Lower Leaves
Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline in your vase. Submerged leaves can rot and promote bacterial growth, which can harm your flowers.
Use Flower Food
If your bouquet comes with a packet of flower food, use it! Flower food contains essential nutrients and antibacterial agents that help your flowers thrive. If you don't have any, you can make your own by mixing 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of white vinegar, and 1 quart of warm water. You will need to chill this to room-temperature to put your flowers in it.
Change the Water Regularly
Every two days, replace the water in your vase with fresh, room-temperature water. This practice reduces bacterial growth and provides your flowers with the hydration they need. Each time you change the water, re-trim the stems to ensure maximum water uptake.
Keep Flowers Cool
Place your arrangement in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and appliances that emit heat. Heat can cause flowers to wilt prematurely. Also, keep your flowers away from ripening fruits, which release ethylene gas that can shorten the lifespan of your blooms.
Remove Wilting Flowers
As individual flowers begin to wilt, remove them from the arrangement. This prevents the spread of bacteria to the remaining healthy flowers and keeps your bouquet looking fresh.
Enjoy the Beauty
Take a moment each day to appreciate your flowers. Their colors, scents, and forms are a daily reminder of nature's artistry. By following these care tips, you can extend that enjoyment and keep your home filled with natural beauty.
